The Eighth House

Spiritually considered the eighth house, or House of Death and Legacies is symbolised by Virgo, the virgin wife, standing before the “Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil” fascinated by the flattering prospects of greater power and wisdom. Desire and sympathy draw the soul down into realms which lead to death, and the beginning of a heritage of sorrow.

Upon the reversed zodiac, the external human plane, the eighth is now symbolised by Scorpio where the old Adam dies. The sensuous has no place in the balanced harmonious being, but recognises sex as law, the door to regeneration now, and that a new legacy is awaiting him. The eighth house is known as the Epicataphora, which means ‘casting down’, it’s a succeedent, feminine and nocturnal house, associated with dark green. In the body it represents the sexual organs, haemorrhoids, gall stones, strangury, the bladder, groin, piles and poisons in general.

This house relates to all matters of death, decay, fear, anxiety and loss, including the quality and nature of death and surgeries involved. It shows unexpected inheritances, wills, legacies, testaments and who shall be the heir to the deceased. Here we can see financial obligations, debts, taxes, loans, money owed to others and that which belongs to the spouse or other party. When seeking a loan, ensure the second house is stronger than the eighth so that the loan works in your favour. When planets transit the eighth it shows a finalising and release of certain elements in life, the nature of the planet will describe that which is no longer fruitful.

Although it’s a house of inner transformation and growth, you will also find issues relating to crisis, hidden (occult) matters, taboos, anguish of mind and deadly fears. True transformation often occurs in bursts of creativity only after the lessons of the house have been fully understood. It is through facing our fears that we overcome them and move forward with strength and wisdom. It is a house of vulnerability from which we will eventually obtain some form of gain. It’s wise not to gamble and take high risks when this house is emphasised. On a larger scale the eighth house will describe the national debt, collectors of taxes, danger to the people through war or disasters and the resources of the enemy; their finances, allies and assistants. You will find the body of advisors and financial relations with foreign countries. The public death rate, mortality, death duties, and the kinds of people who will die. Mars in the eighth shows many sudden and terrible deaths by fire, accidents and crime. It denotes death by military, naval, and medical men, noteable people in the iron and steel industry and those connected with trades to do with fire. Its suggested in events concerning crime, the eighth rules the detectives but in murder cases, the victim. If the significator of an event is placed in the eighth this could be a consideration that the initiator will not see the conclusion of the event. Scorpio and Saturn cosignificate this house.

While no planets rejoice here, Firmicus Maternus claimed the moon finds its joys in nocturnal charts as there is an emphasis on nocturnal qualities. Classical astrology often attached sinister qualities to the moon due to her cyclic nature, being the harbinger of life when full and the element void of life when new.
